Some 25,000 people who work at Safeway Inc. stores and Fry’s supermarkets in Arizona look likely to strike on Friday.

The deadline is 6 p.m. Friday if no new deal can be hammered out.

Safeway (NYSE: SWY) and Tolleson, Ariz.-based Fry’s, which is owned by Cincinnati-based Kroeger Co. (NYSE: KR), signed a mutual lockout deal in the case of a strike, the Arizona Republic newspaper reported. That means one business will lock out union employees if the union goes on strike at the other company.

Pleasanton-based Safeway has about 1,730 stores in the United States and Canada. As of June 20, it had 116 stores in Arizona.

Kroeger Co. has about 2,480 stores in the United States.
